Multi-component time-resolved luminescence spectra.Time-resolved optical stimulation of luminescence has become established as an important method for measurement of optically stimulated luminescence. Its enduring appeal is easy to see with the number of materials studied growing from the initial focus on natural minerals such as quartz and feldspar to synthetic dosimeters such as gas-Al2O3:C, BeO and YAlO3:Mn2+. The aim of time-resolved optical stimulation is to separate in time the stimulation and emission of luminescence. The luminescence is stimulated from a sample using a brief light pulse. The ensuing luminescence can be monitored either during stimulation in the presence of scattered stimulating light or after the light-pulse. The time-resolved luminescence spectrum measured in this way can be resolved into components each with a distinct lifetime. The lifetimes are linked to physical processes of luminescence and thus provide a means to study dynamics involving charge transfer between point-defects in materials.Also available in print.Mode of access: World Wide Web.System requirements: Adobe Acrobat Reader, EPUB reader, or Kindle reader.Makaiko L. Chithambo is a Professor of Physics and Head of the Physics and Electronics Department at Rhodes University, South Africa. Dr. Chithambo earned his PhD from The University of Edinburgh in 2000, his MPhil from The University of Sussex in 1994 and received his BSc from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College, in 1989. His research interests are in the field of experimental solid state physics specialising on the study of point-defects in materials using luminescence and related techniques. He has published extensively in the area of time-resolved techniques, the subject of this book, and on various facets of luminescence research. He is a regular reviewer for many international peer-reviewed journals in this field. Makaiko has been an invited speaker at various conferences, organised international symposia for luminescence in 2008 and 2012, chaired a national conference in 2015 and organised an international conference in 2017. Dr. Chithambo is a recipient of the Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award at Rhodes University where he also served as the Deputy Dean of science. He sits on the Council of the South African Institute of Physics for which he is a past Honorary Secretary. Among other notable national professional services, he was a member of the Group of Experts on a review on Undergraduate Physics in South Africa convened by the South African Institute of Physics and Council on Higher Education.
