Quantitative core level photoemission spectroscopy :a primer /

Col?on Santana, Juan A., - Personal Name; Institute of Physics (Great Britain), - Personal Name;

"Version: 20150301"--Title page verso."A Morgan & Claypool publication as part of IOP Concise Physics"--Title page verso.Includes bibliographical references.Preface -- Acknowledgement -- Author biography -- Brief theory of photoemission spectroscopy -- Quantum mechanics revisited -- Photoemission spectroscopy as a bound eigenvalue energy probe -- The photoemission process -- The three step modelThe elements of photoemission spectroscopy -- X-ray photoemission: macroscopic insight -- Ultra-high vacuum conditions -- X-ray photon sources -- The electron kinetic energy analyzer -- Photoemission as a surface probe techniqueDescription of x-ray photoemission spectra -- Photoemission spectra -- Photoelectron intensity -- Inelastic scattered electrons -- The core level line shape -- Spin-orbit splitting -- Auger lines -- SatellitesCharging effects in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy -- Charging phenomena -- Differential charging -- Methods for charge compensationCore level data analysis -- Common types of background subtraction -- Common types of line shapes in x-ray photoemission spectroscopyExperiments using x-ray photoemission -- Oxidation states -- Nominal specimen composition -- Sputtering depth profile -- Surface segregation -- Thin film thickness -- Surface to core level shift -- Effective Debye temperature -- Measuring Schottky barrier heights.This book introduces the reader to the concepts and instrumentation that emerge in an experimental approach to the photoemission process. The basic elements implemented for the technique are discussed and the geometry of the instrumentation is explained. This book covers each of the features that have been observed in the X-ray photoemission spectra and provides the tools necessary for their understanding and correct identification. Charging effects are covered in the penultimate chapter with the final chapter bringing closure to the basic uses of the X-ray photoemission process, as well as guiding the reader through some of the most popular applications used in current research.Also available in print.Mode of access: World Wide Web.System requirements: Adobe Acrobat Reader.Juan A Col?on Santana, obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 2012. He has contributed to the fields of magnetism and radiation with a total of 24 publications and one patent. Juan was nationally recognized for his work on oxides by winning prestigious awards such as the Leo Falicov award. He is currently a Research Associate in the Department of Physics at Northern Illinois University where he is involved in research, teaching and outreach activities.Title from PDF title page (viewed on March 3, 2015).
